Who this is for
This resource is for support coordinators who are helping young people explore mentoring, activities and connection. It can be useful whether you’re making a referral, having an initial conversation or planning next steps with a young person.
What this resource can help with
The checklist can help you clarify a young person’s goals and interests, consider their communication preferences, identify any access and participation needs, and prepare useful questions to guide a productive conversation with Kickstart.
Prepare around the young person
Use the key areas below to guide your thinking. There is no need to have every detail finalised before you get in touch with Kickstart.
Goals and interests
Take time to understand the young person’s goals, interests and what they would like to do or work towards. Consider their strengths and the supports they already have in place.
Communication preferences
Think about how the young person prefers to communicate and what works best for them. This can help make the first conversation comfortable and inclusive.
Access and participation needs
Consider any access requirements, participation needs, or supports that could help the young person get involved, such as suitable locations, activity types or additional supports.
Useful questions for Kickstart
Jot down any questions you have about mentoring, activities, the referral process, eligibility, timeframes or how the young person can be involved in choosing next steps. Having a list can help you get the most out of the conversation.
